Twelve Days of Christmas Crafts, Day 7-Goat CoatsOur goats don’t like the cold. Thankfully here in Central Florida it doesn’t get too cold. On occasional cold days we like to put clothes(long sleeve child size shirts) on our goats, otherwise in the morning they’re shivering. They live in a barn but it doesn’t have heat so it can occasionally get down to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit(but not often).
I’ve been talking about making goat coats since last winter and recently picked up this pattern when they were on sale for $1.99 at Joann. It’s a really easy pattern with a few different variations and embellishments(hat, scarf, pockets, collar, etc.). Plus it comes in small, medium and large in one envelope, so if you have multiple animals of different sizes you can use this one $2 pattern. Win-win.
I bought the fleece on sale for $4.99 a yard and used 1 1/2 yards for both coats, with a good bit leftover. I could’ve laid out my pattern better and probably made both coats with one yard of fleece, but Oh well…next time. I had some Christmas cotton fabric leftover from a pillow project so I used that for the collar on each coat, because who can resist a Peter Pan collar on a goat coat.
I used pre-made binding from Joann because I wanted to make these coats in a hurry. I generally don’t buy anything I can make myself, to save money, but I used a coupon on each package of binding so it was only $1 each.
This pattern is really, really simple. It’s only one layer, no lining, and the entire coat is one piece of fabric. The collar is separate and of course the binding is separate. It calls for velcro closures on the neck and at the belly. The velcro makes these coats really easy to put on and take off the goats.
The pattern also has instructions for making this coat with two layers if you want it to be more substantial(for colder weather). A quilted fabric with a fleece lining would be super warm and cozy, and really cute.
I was able to make both goat coats in less than two hours from start to finish.
If you’re a beginner sewist or just want a really quick project these coats are a great place to start. I’m sure I’ll use this pattern many times over.
