The best fabric for slipcovers include denim, canvas, duck cloth, twill, linen, cotton, jaquard, and matelasse.  Chenille, velvet and some upholstery fabric get too thick and don’t drape well.

I recommend pre-washing your fabric before the slipcover is made.  The beauty of slipcovers is the ability to just throw them in the washing machine.  However, it is a good idea to test your fabric(possibly even before buying) to see if you still like the texture and look of your fabric after washing.  If you can’t live with some wrinkles you may need to re-think your choice.  If the fabric suits you, then purchase the yardage you need and start washing.  Use hot water and high temperature dry for maximum shrinkage prior to construction of the slipcover.  Remove the fabric from the dryer immediately to avoid big wrinkles and deep creases.  Fold it up, bring it over, and get ready for a transformation!
