I made this mask by request. The wife of a VA worker in need of masks sent me this pattern and it’s by far the most comfortable mask. If you you’re making masks for someone who wears a mask for long periods of time this is the pattern for you. It has a snug fit around the face(no gapping), the ties make it adjustable without irritating the ears and the curved front gives you plenty of breathing room. Try it and make one for everyone.
step 1: Pin your pattern to the fabric opposite each other. OR fold your fabric right side to right side and cut out one side of the pattern so you have opposite pieces of fabric. If you plan on making multiple masks stack your fabric as thick as you can cut it. Cut out your fabric.
Pin two pieces right sides together carefully matching the curved edges.
Sew a 1/4″ seam allowance around the curved edge of the two pieces. Then repeat this process again with another contrasting fabric creating the lining of your mask. Use coordinating thread, I used black for demonstration purposes.
Sew the lining and the front of the mask together across the top and again across the bottom. Be careful to line up the center seam. Sew both top and bottom with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Then turn the mask right side out through one of the sides.
Press the mask seams flat all the way around.
Fold the raw edges of both sides in by 1/2″ and press.
The next step is to make the bias tape for the ties. I made my bias tape between 36″ and 42″ on each side. I have a video link here… https://youtu.be/O9caQmtgutE
Sew the bias tape onto the mask, matching the center of the bias tape to the center of the mask binding the open ends. Then sew the rest of the bias tape closed. I use my blind hem foot for this part so I can run the bias tape right next to the guide and get a perfectly straight seam.
Press the whole thing and you’re done. Printable PDF <<<HERE>>>
face mask templates…if you screen shot this it will print to the exact sm/med. dimension on an 8.5×11 sheet

December 4, 2020 at 10:39 amI just wanted to say thank you for this pattern. I adapted it to elastic over the ears rather than tapes.
I made a few for my family and then a few more for my fellow volunteers at a wildlife rescue. Four hundred masks later I have raised well over £2000 for the rescue through donations in exchange for masks. Time and again people go on about how well they fit :o)

August 27, 2020 at 12:00 amI ironed light weight fuseable interfacing to the inside of the front pieces before sewing the lining to it. It creates an extra layer of protection to your mask and doesn’t effect your ability to breathe.

June 19, 2020 at 7:22 pmThanks for the simple pattern and instructions.
I respectfully modified mine by folding and stitching the sides. I then added a length of elastic (16in was good for me) and tied a knot on the end to allow for modifications. The elastic goes up and around the top and lower prices wraps back of head. The mask fits well and comfortably over the nose around the cheeks and hugs the chin.

June 16, 2020 at 2:54 pmHelp. Want to make this face mask for husband and self. followed directions and got Pattern PDF. Went to print. The image size of your PDF us 34.4 X 44 Inches and does not fit on 8.5 X 11. When it first comes on screen it is showing at 43.2%. If I go to print on 8.5 paper and tell it to print, it scales it down to 24%. I printed. I then compared printed pattern sizes to those you show above. Close but not as you state above,,,smaller. Also confuse by the double lines going down the small edge (outside edge) of the ouside patterns.
Please help me get correct patterns at correct sizes,,, maybe in word ? I really want to make this but already starting on wrong foot.
I sew, a lot and am comfortable making these but don’t want to cut wrong size.
Thanks.

May 16, 2020 at 2:38 pmHave sewn for over 50 years and was a draftsperon as well, so I know my way around creating and enlarging patterns. Please revise your instructions and include a PDF of the pattern rather than relying on the instructions provided:
“face mask templates…if you screen shot this it will print to the exact sm/med. dimension on an 8.5×11 sheet.” This may work on YOUR computer, but will not reliably work on every computer/printer combination. I was able to generate the pattern so that the horizontal measurements work, but when those are correct, the vertical dimensions are not quite right. This will be very frustrating for a large number of readers and will waste a lot of time, paper and ink that would be saved if you provided a PDF of the pattern.

April 28, 2020 at 1:37 pmHi, I just found your post on the face masks and would like to make some, as where I live in Mexico, they’re hard to find and usually the one use, then throw away kind. I tried a screen shot of the pattern and it printed much smaller than normal. Would you please send the pattern in an email that I could copy and use? Thank you!!!
Mimi says
April 28, 2020 at 1:37 amYou can use scunci thick hair pony tail rubber bands that hold the mask around your ears. Thick hair are bigger than regular

April 25, 2020 at 10:01 pmI have found that if you french a short piece of twill or canvas tape onto the curved center seam of one of the layers, it reinforces the structure just enough that it helps keeps the mask in place when you speak.

April 25, 2020 at 4:29 pmCons: difficult to make, especially for a beginner (and w/o sewing machine). Also, most importantly, upper bias tape slips onto hair and loses grip. I’ll try it on a pony tail. Pros: it is, indeed, comfortable and I expect to be able to wear when back in the office w/o getting my glasses foggy. Thanks for sharing.
