My closet cabinet is coming along slowly but surely.
For the last week I’ve been working on these closet cabinets little by little. I was stumped for a while because my doors are 1 1/2″ inches thick and sadly European style full overlay hinges have a maximum door thickness of 3/4″ inch, otherwise they will not open. The hinge side of the door won’t have the space to clear the door adjacent to it(the other hinge side). Fortunately, I read that bit of information on the hinge box before I set all my cabinet boxes in place and fastened them to the wall. That saved me some frustration…but I was left with the dilemma of what to do(after I finished grieving the purchase of these silly doors I thought would save me a bunch of time and grief) .
I considered routing out the inside edge of the door to make it 3/4″ inch thick but couldn’t because the hinge needed 1 1/2″ inches from the doors edge and router bits don’t cut that far. My only option was to space my boxes apart by 1/2″ inch so the doors would swing and clear each other. Bummer! I really, really wanted the doors to line up seamlessly across the wall.
It could be worse. Only 1/2″ inch between door sets. Somehow the doors all fit, they line up relatively well, and they open and close. So far so good. Next I need to tackle the inside. The section closest to the window will be hanging space only, the middle section will have open shelves top to bottom, and the third section will house a TV with drawers below that.
This closet is just the first of many projects in my master bedroom. I have big plans. Next up …paint. I think I want to do high gloss paint on the cabinets and the same color on the walls in a flat sheen and a couple shades lighter. I love a dark cocoon like master bedroom.
After fresh paint on the cabinet and walls I’m going to make a roman shade for the window.
Then a wingback style headboard, a new side table, new art, and eventually new floors.
Everything seems to take much longer than I expect and more money too. Hinges alone were $80 bucks! A result of those silly heavy doors I bought …solid, heavy masonite. They must weigh 70 pounds a piece and required 5 hinges each. ugh!
Oh well…like my mom always said…”you live and you learn and sometimes you just live”.
I’ve got a lot of work to do. If you have any questions about specifics I’d be glad to share.
What do you think of the dark paint? Do you think it will give the walls the ‘eternity effect’ and make the space feel larger?
Oh! I’m going to put brass library lights over each of the door sections as well.
xoxo
