The Person…
Hi…my name is Mimzy…legally Melissa but I’ve been called Mimzy from the day I was born. My mom intended for Mimzy to be my legal name but when my sister and brothers found out they protested, so she put Melissa on my birth certificate and they all called me Mimzy anyway. Some people know me as Melissa because I’m sorta shy and don’t always correct people when I’m addressed from some sort of legal document. …you can call me Mimzy.
The Fam…
I’m a 40 something mom of six lovely children. I’ve been married to my beloved for 16 years this year!!! We’re a blended family, my beloved came with three lovelies and we had three more together (he calls me beauty so sometimes I might refer to Him as Beast). There ages are now 7, 9, 12, 22, 26, and 29. We live in beautiful central Florida. Beast is a transplant of Chicago and I’m a military brat with strong ties to Minnesota and Texas. We love it here in the “Sunshine State” and it would take an act of God to get us to move.
A little background…
We bought our current house 5 years ago. It’s a 1962 rambling ranch with an acre of land, on a crystal clear lake, in a beautiful neighborhood .
Besides being completely outdated and in a mild state of disrepair, it’s our dream house. Some called us crazy, everyone else just thought it. Despite the jalousie windows and pink tiles we love it for it’s potential and it was certainly an act of God that brought us to this house(a whole nother great story). I’m an avid DIY’er from way back. Like my mom always said, ” necessity breeds invention.” So, like my mom I’m not afraid to try just about any project.
When I met my husband I was working at The Home Depot while going to college for fine art. I totally loved the job! There was always something to learn and the project ideas were endless. It was the unpredictable retail schedule that ended my love affair with the job. Plus, I was asked by someone at church if I would be interested in painting a jungle themed mural in her son’s bedroom. I reluctantly took the job and that started my mural painting career. Since then I’ve painted just about everything, literally and figuratively. Many kitchen cabinets, tile, sinks, floors, faces, appliances, fabric, I even painted the likeness of someone’s house on an ostrich egg! So if you need paint advice ask me I’ve probably done it.
Around 2007 I started sewing with my mom who was an amazing seamstress. She had a successful sewing business for more than 20 years. I learned to make custom fitted slipcovers, window treatments, and much more. Since then I have transitioned into home decor sewing almost exclusively. A little painting here and there, but only by very special request. I absolutely love what I do! I have a fabulous workroom in my house where I contently spend most of my time. God is Good!
Why I blog…
I figured if someone can learn from my mistakes it might relieve some of the guilt I feel for the constant chaos of endless projects. Plus if I can make a buck or two in the process…bonus!!! We’ll see. Is a house ever finished?

March 6, 2024 at 12:51 pmHi .The chair is 19th century copy of 1680 chair perfectly good and well restored in deconstructed style. You might need to introduce more variety of under fabrics.Have a look at Howe London who might be world leaders. If you really want to mess about you could introduce some rusty iron mend pieces. What we used to call Irish carpentry.

September 2, 2023 at 9:15 pmHi Mimzy! I’ve really been enjoying your videos! I’ve suddenly become a one woman workroom of sorts (long road to get here, sound familiar?! I can’t believe how God has created a niche for me to do my crazy diy projects at home and get paid for it!!) and I’ve been grateful for your tips! Do you have any tips for attaching tape trim to the leading edge of draperies? I’ve done it on drapes in my home but doing it for customers means it needs to be done right, not my way! Is it possible to do it well without a walking foot machine? Or will take up always be an issue? Do you construct the panel and then attach the trim? Or attach trim after ironing but before sewing the side seams?

June 20, 2022 at 3:20 pmHi Mimzy. I found your great video while I was searching youtube for a refresher on making custom slipcover for a couch. To my great surprise you mentioned that you have often made the slipcover pattern WHILE at your customers home. I have an upcoming slipcover job to do in a FL condo, and would love to get your take on how to best accomplish this pattern on-site.
I too, have strong ties to MN and MI, now live in SW Florida, learned everything I know about sewing from my mom, been sewing and DIY-ing anything and everything since I was a child.
What fun it was to find you, and probs think we should be besties lol!!
If you have a sec, I would love to hear back at your convenience.

January 4, 2022 at 2:18 pmMimzy, I found your video on how to cut small tiles (posted about 4 years ago). The octagon white and black tiles are exactly what I have in my bathroom. I have to replace some of them though, and I can’t find them anywhere. Would you happen to know where to get these tiles?
